BOTOX® Injections

While BOTOX injections are widely recognized as a treatment to smooth lines and wrinkles, the drug’s active ingredient, botulinum toxin, can also reduce symptoms of several neurological conditions.

Dr. Benmoshe at Los Angeles Neurology includes BOTOX as part of a holistic approach to relieving neurological pain and alleviating symptoms like twitching, muscle spasms, and stiffness.

What Is BOTOX?

BOTOX is a neuromodulator that uses botulinum toxin to weaken or paralyze specific muscles through precise injections into targeted areas. It works as a muscle relaxer, as its active ingredient can block specific nerves from releasing the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.

Acetylcholine attaches itself to receptors on the muscle cells, causing them to contract. When BOTOX blocks their signals, it can weaken specific muscles, relieving symptoms such as pain and muscle stiffness.

BOTOX injections typically require one to two weeks to fully take effect, though patients will begin realizing the benefits of the treatment within three to four days.

What Conditions Can BOTOX Injections Treat?

As BOTOX can target involuntary muscle contractions and block nerve endings from sending pain signals, it is an effective treatment for involuntary muscle movement disorders and conditions associated with chronic pain.

Migraines

BOTOX is an effective tool for patients suffering from chronic migraines, defined as headaches that occur at least 15 days a month and have symptoms in addition to pain in the head or face, such as nausea or light sensitivity.

According to the Journal of Headache and Pain, patients have experienced a reduction in chronic migraines of 50% or more through BOTOX injections. BOTOX can reduce the severity and frequency of migraine attacks after two to three months of injections administered to the scalp and temple.

Cervical Dystonia

Cervical dystonia is a painful condition causing the muscles in the neck to contract involuntarily, which makes the head twist or tilt. BOTOX is the most popular and effective treatment for cervical dystonia.

Blepharospasm

Blepharospasm is an abnormal contraction of the eyelid muscles that causes severe, uncontrollable blinking. BOTOX injections are the preferred treatment option for blepharospasm, typically alleviating the condition’s symptoms within about a week.

Hemifacial Spasms

Hemifacial spasms are a nervous system disorder and a form of dystonia. The condition causes one side of the facial muscles to twitch or contract involuntarily.

These spasms may result from a blood vessel pulsing or touching a facial nerve, a nerve injury, or a tumor. Typically benign, hemifacial spasms are well controlled through BOTOX injections.

Spasticity

Conditions such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and strokes can cause specific muscles to contract continuously. This condition, called spasticity, can become painful, creating tightness and stiffness that affects everyday movements, including speaking and walking.

When patients experience spasticity in only one or two areas, BOTOX is an excellent treatment to stop the signal imbalance between the brain and spinal cord and relax the contracting muscles.

The injections can alleviate the pain of tightened muscles while restoring regular nerve communication by temporarily blocking their signals.

Can BOTOX Be Used for Neurological Problems?

Yes. BOTOX is an effective treatment for many central and peripheral neurological conditions, explicitly targeting symptoms and disorders that include:

Excessive blinking
Muscle spasms
Dystonias
Contractions or twitching of the muscles on one side of the face
Spasticity from strokes
Multiple sclerosis
Brain injuries

Studies show that a single injection of botulinum neurotoxin, the main ingredient in BOTOX, provides patients with long-lasting relief from inflammatory and neuropathic pain.

BOTOX can relieve pain by blocking nerve endings from transmitting pain signals to the brain, making it especially effective for benign neurological conditions that cause overactive pain signals.

However, since the effects of BOTOX are not permanent, most patients require follow-up treatments every three to four months to maintain the results.

BOTOX treatments for neurological pain and conditions require the skilled supervision of a neurologist. Dr. Benmoshe at Los Angeles Neurology can determine whether BOTOX injections are beneficial through a thorough examination and evaluation of your symptoms and medical history.

Often, patients experience the best results through combined treatments that may include BOTOX injections, oral or infused medications, and therapies.
