Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is the cause of most cases of dementia, especially for patients over the age of 65. However, younger patients can also show early symptoms of Alzheimer’s, including confusion, memory loss, and disorientation.

Dr. Benmoshe offers comprehensive Alzheimer’s treatment in Los Angeles, including an infusion clinic for Alzheimer’s, to support patients at all stages of the disease.

What Is Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, it accounts for 60% to 80% of all dementia cases.

The disease causes the brain proteins to disfunction, disrupting the brain cells and triggering damage that leads neurons to lose their connections and eventually die. Over time, the continuous death of brain cells causes the brain to atrophy, shrinking it significantly.

What Are 5 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease?

Although everyone’s brain changes with time, significant memory and processing difficulties are not typical signs of aging.

Those who notice one or more of these warning signs should seek dementia treatment in Los Angeles to determine whether the changes are due to Alzheimer’s or another condition:

  1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life, like forgetting events
  2. Struggling to solve problems or perform regular, familiar tasks
  3. Struggling to solve problems or perform regular, familiar tasks
  4. Struggling to understand spatial relations and judge distance
  5. Decreased or poor judgment

Some patients with early signs of Alzheimer’s or dementia are the first to notice their symptoms. However, sometimes friends and family notice marked changes in behavior, memory, or abilities before the person affected realizes their significance.

How Is Alzheimer’s Disease Diagnosed?

Diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease requires a skilled neurologist, as obtaining an accurate diagnosis requires a medical history evaluation, medical status tests, neurological and physical exams, brain imaging, and diagnostic tests.

Currently, no single test can diagnose Alzheimer’s. If you, a family member, or a friend experiences symptoms of dementia, it’s critical to schedule an appointment to begin treatment and receive proper medications for Alzheimer’s.

How Is Alzheimer’s Disease Treated?

Each patient at Los Angeles Neurology is an individual. Therefore, an examination and assessment are necessary to provide a diagnosis and personalized treatment plan.

Unfortunately, Alzheimer's currently has no cure. Some promising new medications have shown efficacy in slowing down the development of Alzheimer’s. As part of his comprehensive approach to treating the condition, Dr. Benmoshe offers infusions, such as Aduhelm, Leqembi and other medications for the treatment of Alzheimer’s in Los Angeles.

The most common pharmacotherapy approach for Alzheimer’s is cholinesterase inhibitors to reduce the disease’s symptoms. These medications boost cell communication by preserving chemical messengers that the disease depletes in the brain.

Additionally, Alzheimer’s patients may also benefit from memantine, a drug that also boosts brain cell communications and is sometimes used in conjunction with a cholinesterase inhibitor.

Recently, the FDA approved a new drug, aducanumab (Aduhelm), for treating Alzheimer’s. Aducanumab is an antibody drug that reduces plaque accumulation in the brain associated with Alzheimer’s progression. It targets the protein amyloid beta, which is associated with neurodegeneration, and removes the protein from the brain.

At our infusion clinic for the treatment of Alzheimer’s in Los Angeles, we offer this disease-modifying treatment that serves as the only FDA-approved medication that goes beyond treating symptoms and instead aims to stop the disease’s progression.
